OTARA SPORTS

ENJOYABLE GATHERING N. A. GARDEN WINS SHEFFIELD. The furthest south meeting on the Southland athletic sports circuit took place at Otara yesterday, when a fine afternoon prevailed for the fixture. An interesting, though not lengthy, programme was put through. Rain in the morning prevented a larger crowd from attending, but there was a good attendance nevertheless. The gate money amounted to £52, a decrease of £l2 on that for the previous year. There was a fair representation of professional runners, and good competition for the Sheffield, N. A. Garden, of the Orepuki district, winning the event off 81 yards. The Gore runner A. B. Crawford annexed the 75 yards handicap, while Myles Forde (Winton), running from scratch, won the 220, came second in the 440, and third in the Sheffield. R. Pickering and R. Frampton, of Invercargill, each secured three placings, Pickering winning the 440. The meeting ranked next to Tuatapere as regards bushcraft, for large entries were received. There were 44 competitors in the 12-inch underhand chop, the total for the four events being 104. As usual the dancing sections formed a pleasing feature of the gathering. In the open Seann Triubhais, some very fine dancing was witnessed, Miss Isobel Macdonald’s performance being outstanding. In the younger classes Joyce Tinker excelled, while the portrayal of the Sailor’s Hornpipe and the Irish Jig by Mavis Gregory and Rosie Tomlins was highly commented upon by the judge (Mr Charles Wilson). Messrs Farquhar, Finlayson and C. C. Selby supplied the pipe music. The officials were headed by the president, Mr A. Black, and Mr W. T. Blair (secretary), Mr A. Lawson (assistant secretary) and Mr J. Taylor (secretary for the bushcraft). The following are the results:—
