BOWLS NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. SINGLES COMPETITION TO-DAY. The Southland Bowling Centre’s New Year tournament —a fixture always keenly anticipated by enthusiasts not only in this province but by many players from the north—commences to-day and will extend until next Wednesday. The singles competition games will be determined to-day, play commencing at 8 o’clock sharp; the rinks follow on Monday and the pairs on Tuesday, while Wednesday has been reserved for the finals. The entries have been well maintained and some interesting and close games should result. Provided the weather conditions are favourable, an endeavour will be made to finalize the singles competition today. All games, with the exception of the finals, will be over 21 heads, with a time limit of one hour ten minutes. The finals are 21 heads with no time limit. The tournament will be controlled by Messrs F. G. Stevnson and J. C. Thomson (president and secretary respectively of the centre), who will have associated with them as umpires and green superintendents Messrs B. E. Leggat (Southland). A. H. Courtis (Northend), and T. Stevenson (Te Rangi). Mr Leggat has been appointed Press stewart. Thirty-five entries have been received for the rinks competition and another entry will be received until this evening from players wishing to form a team. MIXED RINKS COMPETITION.

(Special to the Times.) Queenstown, December 28. A mixed rinks tourney took place on Wednesday. Mrs Stubbs, of Dunedin, was the winner. Three others tied for second place, but rain precluded further play to finalize the match. Rain fell nearly all day to-day (Thursday) and no further games were played. The weather is clearing now and it is hoped to get off the annual match for the Gardiner Cup to-morrow (Friday). Following are the results of the mixed rinks play:— FIRST ROUND. A. Campbell, and Adess with three wins each, play off for second prize. ALEXANDRA TOURNAMENT. SOUTHLANDERS IN FINALS. The finals of the Alexandra bowling tournament were played on Thursday in bitterly cold weather. J. H. Macdonald (Northend) met V. G. Cavanagh (Caledonian, Dunedin) in the singles, but the Southlander played much below his usual form and his more experienced opponent had the game well in hand all the way to register a comfortable victory. Two other Northenders, W. Reid and S. C. K. Smith, contested the pairs’ final with Porter and Seddon (Caledonian, Dunedin). This game was an exciting one and closely contested all the way. Porter and Seddon started well, but the Southlanders evened up the score about halfway through the match. Reid and Smith then took the upper hand and victory seemed assured for them until Seddon sent down a phenomenal c hot with his last bowl to snatch the nby one point. It was a fine finish to an outstanding game. Rawlinson’s rink (Dunedin) defeated Davidson (Clyde) in the final of that competition. At one stage Davidson had a lead of 12—0, but then failed to score on several heads.
