SPORTING

GORE TROTTING CLUB. A SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL FIXTURE. GORE CUP TO OTAUTAU. BLUE MOUNTAIN QUEEN WINS. INCREASED FINANCIAL RETURNS. BY SIR MODRED. There was a representative gathering of South Island followers of the light harness sport on the Gore R.C. s wellappointed property yesterday when the Gore Trotting Club’s Annual fixture was held under satisfactory climatic conditions, apart from a tearing gale, that to some extent interfered with that interesting feature of the pastimes, the racing times. Following on exceptionally unfavourable wintery weather ushering in the Christmas season the sun was always shining for a Boxing Day crowd in which were included visitors from as far north as Christchurch, a large contingent from Dunedin and Otago Central, and wellknown faces reminiscent of every district of Southland in which the trotting horse is held in high regard. It was a holiday crowd, too, and there was cheering for popular fancies winning and loud applause again when a despised outsider's few staunch backers lifted a win pool to the tune of a reward to each beyond a third of a century—the sporting spirit was manifest here in recognition of a long overdue success to a respected Gore mentor. As evidence of the attendance it may be mentioned that the gate receipts amounted to £489, as compared with £473 last year, and the increase of £l6 is really better than it reads, as the admission charge was curtailed for the current season. The meeting was very ablv conducted by the energetic president, Mr J. C. Ray, who left no stone unturned in ministering to the pleasure of visitors and the requirements of the racing and he was ably supported by his vice-presidents and other experienced honorary officials. It can thus be understood that the programme was carried out with due regard to punctuality and if the final event was started a few minutes behind time the fault, if it could be deemed such, lay with an eager public who insisted on crowding the totalisator windows for the last opportunity of a long-day holiday occasion. The racing was of a high class and great interest centred in the principal event of the day, Gore Trotting Cup Handicap, candidates for which were forward from Canterbury, Otago, and Southland generally. An exciting race eventuated and there was sustained cheering when victory ultimately rested with the Otautau-trained mare, Blue Mountain Queen, who has been looked upon since her debut in good company last year as likely to win one of the plums of the current summer campaign. The fact that the winner and h°r runner-up (Young Frank) stayed on stoutly over two miles was also pleasing to those who uphold the home province as productive of pacers capable of seeing out lengthy journeys—this argument was strengthened later when it became known that in the north that afternoon two other southerners, Gold Tinge and Blue Mountain had filled the leading places respectively in the Ashburton Trotting Cup. A feature of the proceedings that appealed to many veteran patrons present was the exciting competition where harnessed square trotters met and thus the argument that unhoppled performers are going out of fashion was effectively disposed of to promise future exhilarating sport in this great class of generaly utility horses. At the conclusion of the race for the Gore Trotting Cup, the president of the club, Mr J. C. Ray extended the season’s greetings to those present at the meeting and on behalf of the club thanked the public for their loyal support during the past lean years. It was that support which now enabled the club to make some concessions by way of reduced gate charges and also to increase the stakes and attach trophies to the principal event. The large attendance present showed that the public appreciated the club's action. The meeting also marked a milestone in that their starter, Mr F. Wallis, senr., had completed 30 years of service as starter for the club. He paid a tribute to Mr Wallis’ ability and stated that he had the confidence of all trainers and drivers. Mr Ray thanked the Gore Racing Club for the use of their course and for the working facilities afforded to the light harness trainers. Mr Ray then congratulated Mr W. Dawson, owner of Blue Mountain Queen, on the success of his mare in the Cup and presented him with the chiming clock which was attached to the stake. Mr Dawson suitably replied, and then Mr Ray presented to Mr J. Maconnell, trainer of Blue Mountain Queen, a set of harness, to mark his success in the chief event that day. Mr Ray expressed his pleasure that a Soutlilander had won the trophy. Mr Maconnell made a suitable acknowledgment. The totalisator returns for the day amounted to £13,486 10/-, as compared with £11,594 10/- last season, an increase of £1892. The win and place systems of wagering were in use and appeared to find favour with the investing public—there was no instance under the place system of an investor receiving less than his stake, a result that would not have been the case had certain recently vaunted means of dispersing machine money been adopt-

ed. Despite the fact that the fixture was held during an awkward holiday season, a happening imposing a severe handicap on the most adept of officials, the secretary, Mr R. S. Green, has his arrangements in clock-working order and his endeavours in this direction were duly recognized and appreciated. It may also be mentioned that patrons of the stands noted with satisfaction that the panes of glass designed to keep out wind and rain had been carefully cleaned so that a view of the racing might not be obscured, and herein lies a hint that might with advantage be taken to heart on several other southern convincing grounds. The following are the detailed results :—

A SOUTHERN CUP SUCCESS. FAST RACING AREA PROVIDED. A GALE SLOWS TIMES. (By Sir Modred.) With fine weather overhead and a good track available, the sting being out of the ground, it was anticipated that the races would be decided at a

fast gait throughout, but a howling gale during the greater period of the afternoon was distinctly against these hopes being realized. The racing was always interesting and the honorary starter, Mr F. Wallis sen., and his able assistant, Mr W. Norman, experienced little difficulty in getting their fields smartly lined up and sent away evenly., Mi - E. J. Traynor occupied the judge’s stand and his decisions were unquestioned, despite the fact that he had several close things to adjudicate upon. The well-known stipendiary steward, Mr F. J. Beer, was present, but found no reason to question the running or the conduct of those actively engaging in the sport. With a sound racing path in use the many lovers of the light harness pastime in attendance looked forward to the Gore Trotting Cup Handicap producing fast times but wind pressure proved too great a handicap and Blue Mountain Queen did well to score in 4.42 3-5 under the circumstances. The first half-mile was covered in 1.13, the first mile in 2.22, and one mile and a half in 3.34.

When proceedings opened with the Croydon Handicap, the public went for Bon Haven, Orphan Bingen and Kippagh. On the win machine Bon Haven had sixteen friends more than Orphan Bingen who was one hundred and two ahead of Kippagh. For a place Orphan Bingen had twenty-one admirers more than Bon Haven, Kippagh thirty-four less backed.

Molly King, Mahinerangi, Peter Conquest and Beatrice Bingen were withdrawn leaving twelve saddle starters. All went away fairly well. Beltane was an early mixer. Western Front drew out from Orphan Bingen, Clipped Wings and Kippagh. At the stands Orphan Bingen headed Western Front, then came Clipped Wings, Kippagh and Sylvia Moko. Always drawing out Orphan Bingen was six lengths clear of Western Front to the back, with a big gap to Clipped Wings, who tangled and Kippagh took third place. At the five furlong mark Western Front broke badly and Kippagh closed on him. Crossing the top Orphan Bingen was a dozen lengths clear, while Kippagh was pressing Western Front. In the straight Orphan Bingen stepped quietly home by ten lengths from Kippagh, with Sylvia Moko eight lengths off third three lengths ahead of Western Front —a tangle inside the distance lost Western Front third place. Imperial Wave was fifth, then Great Patch, Bon Haven and Taiyang. Trotting very smartly throughout Orphan Bingen never looked like getting beaten at the end of the first halfmile to give Central Otago horseman, P. Gallagher, an armchair ride. Ranking as an aged gelding the well-bred winner is another of the useful brigade hailing from the interior of Otago. Kippagh stepped well all the way, but had no chance with the winner. Western Front trotted well, but two bad breaks put him out of court. The fancied Bon Haven was never dangerous, failing to trot correctly at any stage of the journey. The investments totalled £927, as against £719 last season.

Four runners were solidly supported for the Trial Handicap but Green Mantle was always firm favourite. For a win the three-year-old had two hundred and twenty-three friends more than Fairhaven who was one hundred and one ahead of Bright Voyage. On the place Green Mantle had twentynine tickets more than Fairhaven, Bright Voyage seventeen less fancied. From a good start Hard Times and Parish Chimes failed to move out evenly. Kibo dashed out of the bunch quickly to show the way to Lucky Lee, Firecrest and Greenmantle. At the stands Kibo was attended by a closepacing bunch in which Electric Chimes, Greenmantle, Firecrest, Happy Go Lucky, Fairhaven, Black Shadow, and Bright Voyage was about the order, The leaders were the same as Kibo set the gait in the back straight, then Fairhaven and Bright Voyage moved up fast on the outside in an attractive contest. As Kibo commenced her run across the top Black Shadow was next closely pressed by Fairhaven, Bright Voyage, Greenmantle and Electric Chimes. Turning for home Kibo was clear of Black Shadow, Fairhaven, and Greenmantle, while Bright Voyage was drifting. Always holding her own Kibo won comfortably by a good length from Black Shadow, with Greenmantle half a length away third, while Fairhaven was fourth a length further back, then came Happy Go Lucky, Chevalier, Electric Chimes and Sunny Southland. Raced at the recent Winton J.C. meeting in other ownership, Kibo stripped an improved mare to win nicely for owner-trainer J. Walsh, as another member of the successful Blue Mountain King tribe. She stayed on well and in the fullness of time should race well in a two-mile event. Kibo returned a win reward in the vicinity of double figures. The runner-up, Black Shadow, an improving mare, returned a substantial place price. Greenmantle, a well-bred Wrack—-Nantwich gelding, paced a good race into third berth.

The investments amounted to £1778 10/-, as compared with £1279 last season. Nelson Pointer was a hot order for the Telegraph Handicap and the public were on the spot. For a win Nelson Pointer carried one hundred and fifty nine tickets more than Willow Wave who was two hundred and three ahead of Lena Bingen. For a place Nelson Pointer had one admirer more than Willow Wave with Derby Vale two hundred and forty-seven less backed. Dusky was the only defection from the saddle mile. At the start Nellie Osborne and Onoto failed to get away and Derby Vale lost his chance by colliding with Nellie Osborne. Jumping away smartly Leila Bingen took charge from Logan Brae, King Mac and Nelson Pointer. When the back stretch was reached Logan Brae joined Lena Bingen in front, then several lengths away Nelson Pointer, King Mac, Erin’s Boy and Onoto in order. Crossing the top Nelson Pointer moved into second place in pursuit of Lena Bingen. On the home bend Lena Bingen was still in control from the favourite, then came Willow Wave (pacing fast), Margaret Bell, King Mac, and Erin’s Boy. Taking command below the distance Nelson Pointer paced on stoutly to score attractively by two and a half lengths from Lena Bingen, with Willow Wave a length off third, and Margaret Bell about one length further back fourth, then followed King Mac and Erin’s Boy. With his mind intent on the business in hand and ridden by his trainer E. Mitchell the good-looking and wellbred stallion Nelson Pointer won with something in hand for a staunch supporter of the light harness pastime, viz. Mr A. Baird. As he is only a five-year-old the horse by Nelson Bingen—Merce Pointer, by Logan Pointer —Merce, by Galindo, might go on to better things in harness, as he is possessed of pace, action and stoutness. Lena Binfen paced a good race, while Willow Wave and Margaret Bell exhibited speed over the last three furlongs. The investments totalled £lBO7 10/— as against £l4lO last year.

The Gore Trotting Cup Handicap saw five of the runners solidly backed. On the win machine Tangatu was favourite by three hundred and thirty-one over Blue Mountain Queen, Desert Maiden one hundred and three less fancied. For a place Tangatu was six better backed than Blue Mountain Queen, Desert Maiden forty less supported. From an even start Bay Admiral was slow to find his straps, while Marie Celeste and Lady Voison mixed. Blue Mountain Queen paced out very smartly to gain a strong advantage over the first furlong from Tangatu and Grey

Girl. Turning into the back straight Blue Mountain Queen was about a dozen lengths clear from Tangatu, Grey Girl, Mocast and Young Frank in fairly close order, then came Desert Maiden, while Raider was away off. With five furlongs covered Blue Mountain Queen was about thirty yards to the good from Tangatu. With a mile to go at the stands Blue Mountain Queen held an advantage of about three lengths from Tangatu, Desert Maiden (moved up), Mocast, Young Frank, and Grey Girl, all in close order, while Bay Admiral was next. As Blue Mountain Queen led down the back from a closing up bunch, the positions were changing, but Tangatu and Desert Maiden were shading Mocast, Young Frank and then Grey Girl. The cry that Blue Mountain Queen was beaten halfway across the top was premature, as the Otautau representative held her own, then came Desert Maiden, Young Frank, Tangatu (inclined to drift), Mocast, while the pace was telling on Grey Girl, but she stayed on. Blue Mountain Queen was clearly first into the stretch from Desert Maiden, Young Frank, Mocast, Grey Girl, and Tangatu. In the run home Blue Mountain Queen held on to win cleverly by a length and a half from Young Frank, who cutstayed Desert Maiden by two lengths, with Grey Girl about one length oft in fourth place, then came Mocast, Tangatu, Raider and Bay Admiral the lastnamed pair away oft, while Marie Celeste and Lady Voison who practically took no part in the contest, away down the straight. The winner was turned out a picture of condition by her trainer-driver J. M. Maconnell and justified the claims of her Western District admirers that she was a mare of stamina, as she stayed out every inch of the two miles and moved perfectly by the way. It was a good performance to battle up against a full force gale at several stages of the race in a lone-handed effort, and the wind pressure undoubtedly accounted for the comparatively slow time with the track in perfect order. The favourite (Tangatu) failed to stay, but Young Frank and Desert Maiden both paced good races. The investments totalled £2339 (win £lOO5 10/-, place £123310/-) as against £1936 10/- last year.

Chechahco, Sergeant Dallas and Sure monopolized the betting on the Christmas Handicap. For a win Chechahco had sixty-one tokens more than Sergeant Dallas with a gap of twenty-five to Sure. For a place Chechahco led Sergeant Dallas by sixty-one, Sure forty-four less fancied. Lindrum failed to go away right. Dusky commenced very smartly to lead Sure, Lena Bingen and Man o’ Franz, while Sergeant Dallas moved up quickly. At the stands Dusky was setting the pace from Sure, Lena Bingen, Sergeant Dallas, Highland King, Man o’ Franz and Chechahco. Racing down the far side Dusky was still in control from Lena Bingen, Sure, Sergeant Dallas and Chechahco. There was little change approaching the last bend, except that Chechahco had improved his position. As Dusky straightened up for the judge Lena Bingen weakened and Sure was pocketed on the rails, when Chechahco dashed up outside Lena Bingen. Inside the distance Chechahco challenged Dusky and looked to have the race in hand, when Sure darted in between the pair and beat Chechahco by a short head, with Dusky a bare length oft third, and the staying on Margaret Bell a length and a half away fourth, then came Sergeant Dallas, Man o’ Franz, Lena Bingen and Erin’s Chief.

The position of Sure appeared to be hopeless as the distance post was passed, with Chechahco cutting down Dusky at every stride. Just as the favourite’s victory was being proclaimed in no uncertain tones, Sure dashed up and getting through a limited opening, won at the wire. It was a fine race and aroused keen excitement. Sure scored for the lady owner, Mrs W. Mackenzie, whose colours have been prominent this season across the flat and on the trotting path. The investments totalled £1333 10/-, as against £1554 last season—the first decrease of the day.

For the Mataura Trot Triangle, Journey’s End, Teviot Downs and Kippagh were given most attention. For a win Triangle had four hundred and twentyeight admirers more than Journey’s End who was two hundred and fortysix ahead of Teviot Downs. For a place Journey’s End had seven friends more than Triangle with a gap of one hundred and twenty-seven to Kippagh.

Great Patch failed to leave properly and Bell Norris left her feet shortly. The others went off smartly. Journey’s End led out from Beltane, Triangle, Paul Bingen and Kippagh. There was little change to the home turn the first time, when Paul Bingen broke up. At the stands with a mile to go Kippagh just headed Journey’s End, closely attended by Lady Norris, Triangle, Bon Haven, and Teviot Downs (the backmarker made up his handicap quickly). Going to the pack Journey’s End was showing slightly from a packed field composed of Kippagh, Triangle, Lady Norris, Teviot Downs, and Bon Haven. At the far turn Kippagh showed out again, but half-way across, the top Teviot Downs was leading. On the home turn Teviot Downs was in charge from Kippagh, Journey’s End, Triangle, Bon Haven, and Lady Norris, all of whom possessed excellent chances. Teviot Downs was being proclaimed the winner when Bon Haven came fast to get up and beat him by half a length, with Kippagh two lengths away third, a length in advance of Triangle, then came Lady Norris and Journey’s End. It was a very fine race throughout and easily the best square-trotters’ harness event witnessed at a G.T.C. meeting for many years. The successful gelding from Waimate returned a substantial reward to win and was driven a well-judged race by his trainer. Teviot Downs gave away a lengthy start of 108yds and put up one of the best races of his career to lose by a narrow margin. Quite a number of reputed fast trotters took part and this fact being well known exceptional interest centred in the contest.

The investments totalled £1625 10/-, as against £1574 10/- last season.

Jimmy de Oro and Rocksahead were strongly supported for the President’s Handicap. For a win Jimmy de Oro had seven tickets more than Rocksahead with a gap of four hundred and forty three to Azure. For a place Jimmy de Oro carried eighty tickets more than Rock’s Ahead, Azure thirty less backed. Bright Sun tangled at the start, while Scotfree and Chiming Wave got away badly. Azure was smartest to begin from Master Lee, Rocksahead and Carillon Chimes. When the straight was reached the first time Azure was in command, but Scotfree paced to the front at the stands with a mile ahead of him, then came Azure, Carillon Chimes, Rocksahead, Jane’s Bell, and Frank Mac. Racing to the back Jane’s Bell tangled and faded out. Frank Mac and Scotfree in company led Azure and Rocksahead down the back, the last-named tangling and losing five or six lengths. As Scotfree just showed from Frank Mac across the top, Azure and Rocksahead were handy, with Jimmy de Oro making up ground fast from the rear. Scotfree led into the stretch by a narrow margin and carried on to win by two lengths from the fast finishing Jimmy de Oro, who was half-a-length better than Frank Mac on the scoring-line, with Azure a neck away fourth, then came Rocksahead followed by Vologda, Ozanam, and Chiming Wave. Owned, trained, and piloted by the well-known Gore enthusiast J. R. McMurray, Scotfree came in for an

ovation as it is a long time since success crowned the efforts of a deserving mentor. Despite the fact that the son of Drusus returned a win reward of over a third of a century, the applause was none the less hearty from a host of supporters of unsuccessful starters and other people joined in. It was a reception to be proud of following on a fine contest. The investments totalled £1675 10/-, as compared with £1537 last year.

A good favourite in Mocast was found for the Final Handicap but Marie Celeste and Young Frank had many friends. For a win Mocast had two hundred and two friends more than Marie Celeste with a gap of sixty one to Young Frank. For a place Mocast had seventeen admirers more than Young Frank with Marie Celeste forty less backed. Logan Brae, Onoto, and Lady Voison failed to strike a gait at the start. Sunbloom quickly paced to the front from Tangatu, Derby Vale, Marie Celeste and Desert Maiden. Entering the back straight Sunbloom was attended. by Tangatu, Marie Celeste, Desert Maiden and Young Frank. The leader was the same at the half-mile, and Desert Maiden had moved into second berth from Tangatu and Marie Celeste. Momentarily at the far turn Tangatu was in charge, but Desert Maiden joined him, the pair being pressed by Sunbloom, Mocast, Marie Celeste and Young Frank. When the straight was reached and the last furlong was entered upon Desert . Maiden paced to the front to win by a length from Tangatu, with Young Frank finishing well three-quarters of a length off in third place, half a length ahead of Marie Celeste, then came Mocast, Sunbloom and Raider at intervals. Bred by her owner, Mr T. G. Fox, of Christchurch, known for a number of years as an enthusiastic follower of the American sport and president of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, Desert Maiden is a somewhat leggy mare, but a very nice pacer. Following on her defeat in the leading event of the afternoon her success was well deserved, but she had to put her best foot foremost to keep the promising Tangatu at bay over the last nortion of the set distance. She raced well in the Gore Trotting Cup and it was surprising to find that her win followers obtained a double-figure quote. The investments amounted to £2005 10/-, as against £1584 the previous season. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. SUMMER MEETING. LOCKSLEY WINS OTAGO HANDICAP. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, December 26.
