LIMEHILLS SPORTS

LENGTHY PROGRAMME

A. FORDE WINS SHEFFIELD.

TAKINGS SHOW INCREASE.

Bright sunshine greeted the fortyfirst annual sports held by the Limehills Athletic Club yesterday. There was a good attendance of the public. The gate takings amounted to £69 5/-, an increase of £5 over those for last year. A large programme was run off in an expeditious manner, and a highly interesting day's sport was witnessed. A strong gale marred competition in the distance events.

The entries showed a considerable drop over those for last year, mainly owing to the fixture clashing with the Balfour sports. Generally speaking, the finishes were good and in the case of the 220 yards handicap there was considerable dispute over the second placing.

Outstanding success in running events was secured by the Forde brothers, of Winton. A. Forde won the Sheffield off 81 yards and was second in the 75 yards handicap, while M. Forde was third in the Sheffield off 2 yards, and won the 440 off 10 yards. W. H. Jones, also of Winton, ran well, winning the 75. N. A. Garden, of Orepuki, won the 220, while H. Buchanan, of Riverton, has proved a real “find,” and won the mile in fine style. The Christchurch runner D. Flanagan also reproduced Edendale form, winning the half-mile event and coming second in the quarter-mile, off scratch.

The main cycle race was spoilt by a crash in the straight, four cyclists falling. The bushcraft events proved highly interesting, champions from the West Coast and Southland competing. This is the first time that bushcraft events have been staged at Limehills, and the committee arranged them in a manner worthy of emulation. The Winton School won the school shield with 611 points, Limehills securing 50} points. Competition was very keen. R. Thomson, of the Limehills School, secured the Herbert Smith Trust Cup for the year for most points in school shield events. The dancing sections, which attracted satisfactory entries, proved very entertaining and the judge, Mr John McCrostie, expressed himself as being more than pleased with the work presented. Some of the younger competitors, notwithstanding the unfavourable wind, put up creditable performances, he said. Prominent in the prize list were Mavis Gregory, who secured both the under 16 years classes, and Joyce Tinker, who gained the awards in "the Highland Fling under 10 and 12 years respectively. Other meritorious performancse were those of Malcolm McKellar (Oamaru) and Audrey Moylan, Sword Dance, Maureen Lindsay, Irish Jig, and Ursula Calder, Highland Fling. Messrs Lindsay Taylor and Farquhar Findlayson supplied the pipe music for the dancing. Over 50 events were run off promptly by hard-working band of officials under Mr G. Wilson, jun. (president), and Mr E. J. Crowe (secretary). The Browns Pipe Band was in attendance. Tire following are the results:—RUNNING. MAIDEN 100 YARDS. First £l, second 10/- (Seven entries): R.
