OBITUARY

MR GEORGE CARWELL COOKE. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, December 19. The death occurred at Wadestown yesterday of Mr George Carwell Cooke, aged 73. Mr Carwell Cooke was bom at Astley Guise, Bedfordshire. At the age of 26 he went to Melbourne where he engaged, in journalism. In 1903 he came to New Zealand and worked with the Evening Press and later with the United Insurance Company. In 1907 he joined the Friendly Societies Department but in the following year transferred to the Audit Department with which he remained until he retired in 1927. For about seven years prior to his retirement he supervised the local bodies audit. For some years he was editor of the accountants’ paper, entitled “Accountancy, Commercial and Insurance.” In 1919 he published a small booklet, “Odd Rhymes.” He is survived by his widow, three daughters and two sons.
