The items presented by the pupils from the opening chorus to the final “Good Night” number went with a verve and swing which charmed the audience. Throughout the long and varied programme there were unmistakable evidences of continuous and careful training by the staff—Mr Mason, Mrs McGaw and Miss Powell. The audience was not slow in showing its appreciation and a vote of thanks to teachers and pupils was very heartily endorsed by the audience. Mr Andrew Ronald, chairman of the school committee, in presenting the prizes to winners, stated that at the recent examination, all the pupils of Standard 6 (Form 2) obtained certificates, and that of the roll of 115 scholars, 40 had earned good attendance certificates—a tribute to the good health of the pupils and the good sense of their parents. Mr Wm. Grieve, president of the Waianiwa Ex-pupils’ Association, in handing to Margaret Jean Stevenson, the 1933 dux, the gold medal donated by Mr B. C. Supper provided by the ladies, and a dance formed a fitting conclusion to the evening’s festivities. OBAN Demonstration Day was held at the Oban School on Tuesday afternoon when the children gave a display of their handwork, games, drill, singing and recitation. The children gave a programme _o£ songs and recitations, the latter being given by Avis Young, Elsa Sloan, Trena Dawson, Peter McKellar, Marjorie Traill and Betty Hamilton; and then adjourned to the playground where they gave a fine display of physical drill and games followed by a basketball match, girls versus boys. Afternoon tea followed and an amusing and well performed playlet by the juniors,_ “The Happy Man.” Mr R. Hicks, as chairman of the School Committee, congratulated the children and teachers on their performance and work. Instead of giving prizes they were buying, books for the school library which he hoped the children would appreciate just as much. He then called on Captain Bell Captain Bell said that the work of the children was as good as any that he had seen at similar functions on the mainland, and assured everyone that, as a representative of the school on the Education Board, he would take a very good report to the next board meeting. He was particularly pleased with the choice of recitations which were both simple and sound in moral. Captain Bell told the children that they did not realize the perfect conditions under which they were receiving their education; but when they left and came back again they would find something here in the island which they had never found anywhere else. The board had been asked to make £3OOO do the work of £7OOO and con-
sequently had been unable to give the school all that it wanted, but where they could do anything to help they would certainly do so. Mr Farrant (headmaster) thanked the chairman and Captain Bell for the kindness of their remarks and said that from the two ladies who had assisted him he had had every help that he could wish for. He addressed a few heartening words to those children who were leaving school to go out into the world on their own,, without the support which had been given them for so many years; and thanked the parents and all others who had taken an interest in the school.
