OTAUTAU

Miss May Collie, Bayswater, spent a few days with friends in Invercargill during the week. Miss Evelyn Beck, Rangiora, who has been visiting her friends, Mr and Mrs G. A. Burnett, Bayswater, and the Booth family, Aparima, for a few days, has returned home. Mrs Bickerstaff, Crookston, is spending a few days this week as the guest of Miss Malcolm and Mr D. Malcolm, Bayswater, Mrs E. Matheson, accompanied by Mrs Mirrielees and Mr J. Merrielees, Orepuki, left on Friday for a holiday at Rotorua. Mr and Mrs R. Shepherd, Dunedin, are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Smyth. Mr and Mrs D. Finnegan, Christchurch, are spending a holiday with Mrs Keith and Miss Finnegan. There was a small attendance at the evening on Monday last run under the auspices of the Otautau Rangers and Rovers in aid of the health camp. Music was provided by Miss N. Renowden and Mr D. Roberts, while Mr R. R. Walker acted as M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Hope and Mr K. McKenzie and a lucky spot by Miss Hope and Mr R. R. Walker. As a token of appreciation of her 12 years’ service as librarian, and secretary for a term, Miss M. K. Gould was the recipient of a presentation of Rosemary Rees’ latest book, “A Holiday in New Zealand,” from the Otautau Library Committee. All the names of the members were inscribed therein. Misses Ecandrett and Derbie, Invercargill, are spending a few days with Mr and Mrs F. J. Collie and Mr and Mrs H. D. Collie, Bayswater.

On the eve of her approaching marriage Miss P. McDougall was the guest of honour at an evening at Mr and. Mrs J. M. Lindsay’s residence on Friday, at which there was a large attendance. Dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Miss N. Renowden (piano) and Mr D. Roberts (saxophone), while an extra was played by Mr F. Beer. At a convenient interval Mr A. Liddell, on behalf of those present, asked Miss McDougall to accept a cheque as a token of the esteem in which she was held, and he wished her every success and prosperity in hex married life. Mr J. Lindsay responded on behalf of the recipient. Following were amongst those present: Mr and Mrs McDougall. Mr and Mrs J. M. Lindsay, Mr and Mrs A. H. Lindsay, Mr and Mrs W. Collie, Saunders, Beck, Manson, Smellie and Low, Misses McDougall, Beggs (2), Brown, J. Collie, Hardy, Stevens, Burns, Laing, L. Collie, Smyth, Scandrett, Derbie, Duncan . (3), Porteous, Chisholm, Price, Smellie (2), Scott, McConachie, ! Finnegan, Wesney and Paulin; Messrs McDougall, Harrington (2), Fisher, Collie (4), Smyth, Thomson, James, Smyth, J. Collie, Forbes, Jamieson, Whitehead, Melton, Trotter, Beer, Stewart, H. Macpherson, Ramsay,-Smellie (3), Spratt and others. Miss McDougall, who has been an active member of the Otautau Tennis Club, was tendered an evening on the courts on Thursday, when there was a large attendance. All the members took part in a Yankee tournament, which was won by Miss McDougall and Mr K. McKenzie. At a convenient interval in the proceedings Mr G. B. Bums (president) expressed regret that the club was losing a very active and energetic member, who had always filled her position in the team creditably, and had taken a keen interest in the welfare of the club. On behalf of the members he wished her every success in her married life. These remarks were endorsed by Mr R. W. Janson. “For she’s a jolly good fellow” was heartily sung, after which Mr R. S. Harrington replied on behalf of Miss McDougall, thanking the members for the pleasant evening and kind remarks. Supper provided by the lady members, and the singing of Auld Lang Syne terminated a very pleasant function. Those present were: Mr and Mrs Janson, Mr and Mrs M. Coulter. Mesdames Evatt and A. H.
