A SERIOUS CHARGE
COMPANY MANAGER. FALSE PRETENCES ALLEGED. (Per United Press Association.) Gisborne, December 8. This morning Detective McLeod arrested Charles Goldsmith, manager of the Waiapu Farmers’ Co-op. Coy., on a charge of a serious nature and, in making application for a remand, the detective stated that protracted inquiries were entailed. The charge preferred against Goldsmith was that “on or about June 6, 1933, at Tikitiki, with intent to defraud, he did obtain from H. J. Fletcher, postmaster at Tikitiki, the sum of £BO. the property of the New Zealand Government Maori Unemployment Relief Fund by means of a certain false pretence, to wit by falsely representing that one, Wi Matahiki had been employed on certain work under the Maori Unemployment Relief Fund.” The accused appeared before the Court at Port Awanui this morning and was remanded until January 17. The remand was granted on the detective s application and with the consent of accused. In making the application Detective McLeod stated that considerable inquiries had yet to be made necessitating the remand of the accused, who had promised to afford every assistance in the inquiries. An application was made for bail and the detective asked that bail should be fixed in a substantial amount _as many hundreds of pounds were involved. Bail was allowed in the sum of £5OO in the accused’s own recognisance. together with a surety of an equal amount.
