ABOUT PEOPLE

Mr A. McDowell, of Dunedin, soloist for “The Messiah,” to be given by First Church choir on Monday evening, reaches Invercargill to-day. Misses E. Shepherd and M. Howden arrive from Dunedin on Monday. At the quarterly conference of the South Island Motor Union yesterday, a resolution was carried expressing sympathy with Sir Arthur Dobson, of Christchurch, a patron of the Canterbury Association, in his severe illness and wishing him a speedy recovery. Motions of condolence with Mr A. J. Service, county clerk, in the loss of his daughter and with Mrs F. C. Newton, whose husband met his death in a road-grading accident, were carried at yesterday’s meeting of the Southland County Council. Mr James Hislop, headmaster of the Napier Central School, who is about to retire after 51 years’ service, was farewelled yesterday by members of the Hawkes Bay Education Board, states a Press Association message. Tributes were paid to Mr Hislop’s outstanding service which was said to be a record for any teacher in Hawkes Bay. Mr Haldane Georgeson, of Invercargill, leaves for Wellington, accompanied by his father and his brother by the express this morning. Mr Georgeson has been specially recommended by the Government as a candidate for entrance to the Royal Air Force, and leaves Sydney on December 19 for England. On his arrival in London he will undergo final minor tests prior to proceeding to the R.A.F. base at Uxbridge, Middlesex. Representatives of the Southland Ski Club and the Southland branch of the New Zealand Alpine Club gathered last evening to bid au revoir to Mr L. V. Bryant, who leaves shortly for England and the Continent where, during his year's leave of absence, he intends to indulge in sight-seeing and climbing. Abundant evidence of Mr Bryant’s popularity as captain of the Ski Club and as a mountaineer was forthcoming from numerous speakers.
