Dr. R. Campbell Begg, of Wellington will arrive in Invercargill on Monday next in connection with New Zealand Legion matters.

At the annual meeting of the Auckland division of the the British Medical Association, Mr W. A. Fairclough was elected president. The retiring president is Mr Kenneth MacKenzie.—Press Association message. Mr G. S. Finlayson, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Gore, will retire at the end of the present year. His successor is Mr R. Archibald, of the Edendale branch. Mr Hall, of the Christchurch branch, will take Mr Archibald’s place.

The death has occurred in the Auckland hospital of Constable William Mclnnes, aged 62. He was stationed at Remuera for 23 years and was always in charge of juries at the Supreme Court when they deliberated at night. He was also a wellknown bowler.— Press Association message. The death is reported from Palmerston North by Press Association telegram of Mr James Keir Simpson, formerly Police Superintendent for Palmerston North, who retired in 1931. The deceased also served at Greymouth, Kaiapoi. Auckland, Dannevirke, Oamaru and Christchurch. An adventure in Mr Simpson’s police career happened at Murchison a number of years ago when the house he occupied was dynamited at one end but no one was injured. Mr John Swaney, formerly of Temuka, who died in Christchurch recently, was born in Scotland 88 years ago. He came to New Zealand in the ship Merope. arriving at Lyttelton in 1870. He settled first in Rangiora, but latex- removed to Southbridge, and then to Wakanui. While in the Ashburton district he married Mrs Robert Stewart, nee Miss Crowe. From Wakanui, Mr Swaney removed to Woodlaw, Southland, returning from there to Rangitata a few years later. While at Rangitata, Mrs Swaney died, and from that district Mr Swaney removed to Culverden, where he had drawn a portion of the Culverden estate in a ballot. Mr Swaney was married twice, his second wife being Mrs W. de B. Wilson, daughter of the late Mr Joseph Benny, of Holly Farm, Southbridge. She died eight years ago. Mr Swaney is survived by a daughter, Mrs G. Collins, of Temuka, a son, Mr Ernest Swaney, of Ashburton, and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
