CHARLES CHAPLIN

“WORLD’S SADDEST MAN.” Charlie Chaplain, the world’s saddest man, is once again in search of happiness. At least, so the gossips on the inside of Hollywood assert. Charlie has for a long time been squiring his latest leading lady to all the best parties, says a correspondent of the Sunday Chronicle. Her name is Paulette Goddard. She is still not nineteen. Charlie has been seen about with her ever since his return from his last world-voyage. It was rumoured many months ago that the pair had secretly married in Mexico. Charlie denied that. But now his most intimate friends assert that the marriage will take place “very shortly.” When Charlie was last in England he protested most strongly that he would never marry again. “I have never found happiness with women,” he said with that famous melancholy smile. He is the world’s saddest little man, but he looks happy when with Paulette.
