Mrs P. B. Macdonald was hostess at afternoon tea on Friday. Miss Pears, Etavale, returned to her home early in the week. Mrs C. B. Tapley has taken a house at Riverton for the week-end. Mr and Mrs L. H. Mirams returned to Dunedin by car on Wednesday. Miss Howells, Waianiwa, is the guest of her sister, Mrs J. Hunter, Don street. Miss Watson, Forth street, gave a small tennis party on Wednesday morning. Mrs E. K. Smythies was hostess at a very jolly bridge party on Thursday evening. Mrs B. C. Basstian, Tweed street, who has been spending a holiday in dunedin, returned home on Thursday. Mrs Ulric Smith, Nith street,. returned to Invercargill by last evening’s express after a week s visit to Dunedin. Mrs Ralph Abercrombie and her daughter Gwyneth, Riverton, have been staying with Mrs McHugh, Thames street. Miss Yvonne Levvey, Herbert street, has returned from Christchurch to spend the summer holidays with her parents. Miss Oliver Kay, who was the guest of Mrs W. Fordyce, Tweed street, returned to Dunedin on Wednesday morning. Last Tuesday morning, Mrs C. J. Brodrici: gave a tea-party in her pretty garden for Miss Estelle Field, who was her guest. Mrs H. K. Sumpter and her children, Alice street, left Invercargill on Thursday morning to spend an extended holiday in Oamaru. Last Wednesday, music lovers had an enjoyable evening at. the home of Mrs C. N. Roberts, Albert street, Mr Moore, the Associated Board music examiner, being the guest of honour. A jolly time was spent in the Mary Elizabeth on Thursday evening when Miss Hemmingsen, who is shortly to be married, was the guest of honour at a pantry evening arranged by the Herbert, Haynes staff. _ Games and musical items made the time pass pleasantly. Guests at the Grand Hotel during the week include Dr. and Mrs Redman (Marlborough), Miss Levick (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Budd (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Haycock (Wellington), Mrs Kermode (Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia) and Dr. and Mrs Hunter (Dunedin). The sun shone brightly for the Winton races yesterday. A few of those present were Mesdames F. C. Rowley, Baird, Waldron, Trotter, Kennedy, J. S. Robbie, Barclay, C. F. A. Jones, J. S.
