At the end of the first day’s play in the tennis test between England and Australia, Australia is leading by 3 rubbers, 7 sets, 65 games, to 1 rubber, 5 sets, 51 games. Results: — Singles. A. Quist (Australia) defeated F. H. D. Wilde (England), 4—6, 6 —l, 6 3. V. McGrath (Australia) defeated G. P. Hughes (England), 6 —2, 6—2. H. Hopman (Australia), defeated H. G. N. Lee (England) 4—6, 6—l, 7—5. Doubles. Perry and Wilde (England) defeated J. Crawford and McGrath (Australia), 10—8, 6—3, 3—6, 6 —3. The best match of the day was between Hopman and Lee. The Englishman attacked strongly and won the first set, not allowing the Australian to come to the net. Hopman improved in the second set, while Lee lost touch. The deciding set was most exciting. Lee raced to a s—o5 —0 lead by means of strong driving and serving. Hopman then retrieved brilliantly to avert a love set defeat. Lee had match points at s—l and 40—0, but Hopman, playing inspired tennis, carried the scores to 5 all. Lee again had match points at 5—4 anc j 40—15, but amidst tremendous excitement Hopman went on to win the set and the match. McGrath easily accounted for Hughes who employed a heavy cut on his drives. McGrath’s forehand improved and his backhand was working perfectly. He repeatedly left Hughes standing. The Quist-Wilde encounter was a poor exhibition, both making frequent errors. Quist won because of his ability to come to the net and volley winners. The doubles match was also a poor exhibition. Crawford failed on all shots, netting and outing with monotonous regularity. Perry dominated the play at the net, while Wilde's overhead work and volleying were very good. McGrath again gave a fine exhibition, but Crawford’s form was too bad to enable the Australians to win.
