CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. SHIPPING MATTERS.

The fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: Messrs William Grieve (chairman), A. le H. Hoyles, A. M. Macdonald, S. Vickery, O. J. Wright, W. A. Ott, H. L. Mair, R. W. Spencer, H. S. Cordery and C. S. Stevens. Correspondence was received from several importing firms expressing disapproval of the dates allotted Southland in a schedule of sailings from West of England ports. The writers stated that the dates fixed for Bluff were by no means suitable for a district so largely concerned with the export of dairy produce. “It is certainly a serious position so far as Southland is concerned,” said the chairman. “The same trouble arose last year and when written to the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee promised to have the matter rectified this year, but they have not done so.” On the motion of Mr Hoyles it was decided to write to the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee drawing attention to the position and expressing disappointment that the assurance given last year of more favourable dates had not been fulfilled. In the expectation that at the conclusion of the Melbourne centenary celebrations many visitors might favourably consider a tour of Southland and other parts of the Dominion, it was decided to co-operate with the Southland League in making representations for the institution of a Mel-bourne-Bluff service for a limited period.
