In the - absence of the president, Mr J. Sloan - presided. o A long discussion was held concernt ing the proposal to unveil the memord ial on December 9. Tentative arrangey ments were made and held over to f next meeting. It was decided to invite Mr G. A. y Simmers to become an honorary mem- '. ber of the association. s Mr C. Smith was elected as official t R.S.A. delegate to the local Progres1 sive League. 2 Personal. = Miss S. Houston of Christchurch is t spending a holiday on the island. She is the guest of Mr and Mrs T. Bragg. j Mrs J. W. Thomson has returned 1 from an extended visit to the north. r Mrs J. Marshall, of Halfmoon Bay { was a passenger for the mainland on j Thursday. Progressive League. 3 The monthly meeting of the Stewart Island Progressive League was held on 3 Friday evening. Mr J. Sloan presided. 2 At the invitation of the league the ’ following were present to decide what ‘ to do with the money they subscribed to enable the Progressive League to join the South Island Tourist League: , Miss B. Thomson, Messrs H, Jordan, C. j Back, R. C. Hicks and T. Bragg. The president explained that the , subscription had now been refunded 1 by the Tourist League and his league I suggested that the money be used for f the purchase of printed envelopes and advertising the island in the northern , papers. j After a lengthy discussion the busi- , ness people decided to leave the matj ter in the hands of the Progressive , League and it was finally arranged to t purchase 5000 printed envelopes and . to expend the balance in advertising. • County Council. The monthly meeting of the Stew r ’ art Island County Council and Half- ■ moon Bay and Horseshoe Bay Har- ’ bour Board was held on Thursday 1 evening. Mr W. T. Widdowson pre- ! sided. . Two applications were received for permits to erect huts. Both were granted subject to the usual conditions. A letter was received from Mr E. Pleasant drawing the council’s atten--1 tion to the fact that it had cut tree ferns on his property without permisI sion. He claimed compensation for ! same. It was decided to ask Mr Pleasi ant to show his pegs as the road boundary is not fenced. Mr F. H. W. Traill wrote asking the council to put some gravel across the road from the baker’s shop to Oban House to enable people to cross dryshod in wet weathpr. It was decided to attend to same. A letter was received from Mr P. Moore-Carter offering his services for running the council’s electric plant. After a short discussion it was decided that the fairest way was to call for applications for the position. It was decided to apply to the Tourist Department for a grant of £5O to put the tracks in order for the coming season. It was decided to accept the tender of Messrs Hawkins for supplying timber for the repair of the Mill Creek bridge. The county inspector reported that he had issued several warnings regarding wandering cattle. Also that he had found a tree which had been felled across one of the tracks. He is endeavouring to trace the parties responsible. Yacht Chib. A general meeting of the Stewart Island Yacht Club was held on Monday evening. Commodore T. Bragg presided over a fair attendance of members.

In view of the fact that the Southland Provincial Yacht and Motor Boat Association has definitely challenged for the Sanders Cup, it will be necessary to hold trials for the purpose of choosing a boat for the contest. After some discussion it was decided to suggest to the Southland Association that the first series of trials be held at the Bluff Regatta m January 1. and 2, when all three of the Stewart Island boats will be present, and that the second series be held at the Halfmoon Bay Regatta on January 6. Members were of the opinion that this would be the fairest way out of the difficulty and hoped that the Southland Association would adopt the suggestion. It was decided to invite the Riverton Club to pay a return visit covering the week-end January 6, and take part in the local regatta. It is also hoped that boats and crews | from Invercargill and Bluff be present ovet the same period
