NEW SPORTS AREA

NORTH INVERCARGILL PROPOSAL.

COMMITTEES SET UP.

A meeting of those interested in the formation of a sports area for North Invercargill was held last evening, Mr H. Ritchie presiding over an attendance of 19. After a fair amount of general discussion, during which most of those present expressed themselves as heartily in accord with the proposal, committees were set up to advance arrangements to a more definite stage. The chairman read correspondence relative to the project and discussed efforts already made towards securing a site. He remarked that it would be possible to secure an area adjacent to the North School, but he would not like to see the playing area taken away from the children. He would like an expression of opinion from those present as to the possibilities of getting enough supporters to start a sports area. The district was not a wealthy one, being composed largely of working men, and if they were going to acquire a freehold section they would have to dig deep in their pockets. They could get a very fine area in the northern part of Queen’s Park, but this was not central enough while also tapping the clubs already in that vicinity. Mr A. L. Adamson said they should endeavour to obtain a site somewhere central. If they were going to establish a bowling green there was a big field to work on between Windsor street and the eastern boundary. North Invercargill had never done a great deal in the way of establishing a bowling green, the chairman said, but there were many who would readily play if there was a green handy. There was the problem of finance; if they did acquire a freehold section, how were they going to obtain the money? he asked. About the only way was to organize a carnival. It was emphasized that all sports were to be catered for, and not merely bowls. After some further discussion the chairman requested a concrete expression of opinion as to the desirability of continuing with the project. Mr G. F. Inder moved: “That in the opinion of this meeting of residents of North Invercargill an effort should be made to form a sports club, to include bowls, croquet, tennis and other sports.” The motion was seconded by Mr G. Hunt and carried unanimously. The secretary (Mr Adamson), said they should appoint sub-committees. He personally would be pleased to devote as much time as possible to secretarial work.

The chairman again commented on the financial difficulty, saying that they would probably require £350 to £4OO before they were read}' to play.

The following committees were appointed: Selection of sites, the chairman, Messrs H. Mason, R. Mullen, G. F. Inder, D. Meredith and H. Moorcroft; finance, the chairman, Messrs A. L. Adamson. J. Holland, J. J. Stott, L. J Clapp and R. Ryan; membership, Misses D. Ryan and J. Holland, Messrs Morgan, G. Hunt, D. Meredith, A. Woodward, Burgess, C. D. Fairweather, H. Moorcroft and Ferry (with power to add). ___________
