One of the best diaries discovered in recent years was that of the Rev. William Cole. Now Constable promises us more of it, for on New Year’s Eve in 1767 Cole found himself settled at Waterbeach, where he continued his journal. Miss Helen Waddell has done an introduction to this “Waterbeach Diary,” and it has been edited by F. G. Stokes. In it is a reference to Gray, the poet, and to an ode by him which Cole thought “elegant and well set.” A large collection of Queeney Thrale’s correspondence was found by Lord Lansdowne in the library at Bowood. He is giving us the letters, with many from Fanny Burney, in a book announced by Cassell, “The Queeney Letters.” The epistles clear up some of the misunderstandings and difficulties that surrounded Mrs Thrale’s later life, and those by Miss Burney belong to the time of her “Evelina.” Messrs Faber has just published “Henri Gaudier-Brzeska,” by Horace Brodzky—a personal memoir of the artist supported by sixty illustrations of his work. Brzeska was killed early in the war at the age of twenty-three. Since his death his work has become famous, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, and the British Museum have all acquired examples. This memoir is by a personal friend and brother-artist. In September Messrs Faber published “Trekking On,” by Deneys Reitz, a continuation of the narrative of “Commando.” This book tells of Reitz’s return to South Africa from exile, of his co-operation with Smuts and Botha, of the Great War, and the part he played in it. There is a foreword by General Smuts.
