McCormick, a member of the Northern Ireland Parliament, was going to his home in Belfast when he was held up by two men and ordered to put up his hands. Instead he struck one on the head with his walking stick, resulting in a struggle in which three shots were fired. Major McCormich was wounded once in the arm, but not seriously. He had persistently questioned Ministers concerning measures against the Republican Army.
