LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
When Peter Vibart and his Chariian left “The Broad Highway” they little knew what Jeffery Farnol, their creator, had in store for them. Peter and his wife were destined to live happily ever after; but though they remained ardent lovers troubles came to them when Richard, their son, came of age. Richard inherited the strength of character his parents had both shown, and when he fell in love with Rosemary Ford, the daughter of Black George, who played such an important part in “The Broad Highway,” Sir Peter was annoyed, but Charmian, as usual, managed the situation and saw to it that her husband agreed, and even persuaded Black George to agree, to their union. Their love being true, its course could not be smoothe. The lecherous Earl of Abbeymere was killed and both Rosemary and Richard confessed to having caused his death. Ilford, Abbeymere’s son, also coveted Rosemary, and complicated the situation by his threats to kill Richard rather than permit him to have Rosemary. Richard, like his father, took to the road; Rosemary, like Charmain, fled from her home. Richard's adventures and the course of his romance are told in “The Way Beyond,” which is sufficiently reminiscent of “The Broad Highway” to make one believe in heredity. The young people meet again in London and after many troubles they emerge into the light, back to the arms of Peter and Charmian with the mystery of Abbeymere’s death solved and the future bright. Highly romanticized and told with the author on intimate terms with his reader, this novel will please the admirers of Jeffery Famol immensely, even if it lacks the spontaneity which made “The Broad Highway” so notable. “The Way Beyond” by Jeffery Famol (Messrs Sampson Low, Marston and Co. Ltd., London, through Messrs Robertson and Mullens Ltd., Melbourne).
