Angling Competition. The Mataura Angling Club held its Labour Day week-end open and novice competition when six entries were received in the former and four in the latter class. The Mataura, Wyndham and Mimihau waters appeared to be the most popular and with the bright sunshine prevailing together with the swollen rivers due to recent rains, conditions were not of the best, nevertheless some splendid baskets were weighed in. With 58 fish totalling 651 b 13ozs, Mr George Adam easily won the open, Mr John Adam being second with 30 fish weighing 281 b lloz, S. Allison with 37 fish equalling 241 b Boz being next in order. Other competitors were Messrs A. McKenzie, G. R. Amos, and A. Perry. Total fish 125 with a weight of 1191bs.

In the novice section Mr W. Haywood secured first prize with 31 fish weighing 28Ibs • 14oz with A. McKay second with 34 fish 281 b Boz. Also competing were Miss F. Wilson with 23 fish—2olb 2oz and G. Henry 8 fish 91b 2oz. Total fish 96, weighing 841bs lOoz. Heaviest fish caught by Mr George Adam 61b 2oz. Cricket. The fifth annual Labour Day cricket match between the Bluff and Mataura teams was played on the recreation ground in ideal weather and resulted in a win for the local team by three wickets. The following were the scores:—

Rifle Shooting. The first whole day shoot of the Mataura Defence Rifle Club was held on Labour Day in ideal weather which made conditions for shooting extremely favourable except that at the longer ranges the bright sun troubled the competitors somewhat. In the morning a match with the Miniature Rifle Club’s team was fired, conditions being 10 shots with two optional sighters at 300yds the result being a win for the Defence team by 413 to 398. The ranges 300, 500, and 600 yards were completed during the afternoon, these being the first count for championship points. The highest aggregate was secured by Rifleman F. S. Parker with 136, Lieutenant J. A. Munro and Rifleman R. Barclay being close up with 135. Range prizes were annexed as follows:—300 yards, Rifleman F. S. Parker with 46; 500 yards, Rifleman R. Barclay with 48; 600 yards, Rifleman A. O. Ross with 44. Following is the scoring in the interclub match.
