OTAUTAU NOTES

WESTERN DISTRICT TENNIS TOURNAMENT. (From Our Correspondent.) Beautiful weather conditions favoured the holding of the tournament held at Otautau on Monday under the auspices of the Western District Tennis Subassociation, and the success of the function is no doubt due to the president (Mr Higgins), the secretary (Mr J. A. C. Mackenzie), Messrs P. Grant, G. B. Burns and the other officials of the association. Representatives of the following clubs competed: Nightcaps, Tuatapere, Ohai, Thornbury, Waimatuku, Riverton, Wairio and Otautau. At the commencement Mr Higgins (president of the association) thanked the members of the Otautau Club for placing their courts at their disposal, and welcomed the players and visitors. Owing to the fact that 120 entries had been received, he urged players to cooperate with the officials and take the courts when desired. He thanked the ladies of the Otautau Club for providing the refreshments. The ladies’ doubles were won by a Nightcaps pair, Misses Kelly and Hunt, and the men’s doubles by Messrs Banks and Buchanan (Riverton). The combined doubles were not finished, and as an endeavour was made to get the tournament completed the handicaps had to be halved, and the points had to be reduced.

In presenting the cups to the winners Mr Higgins expressed his pleasure at the manner in which the tournament had been carried out, and for the co-operation which had been extended to the officials by the players. The finalists for the combined doubles lived close together and a play-off could be arranged either at Thornbury or Riverton. He congratulated the winners on their success.
