NIGHTCAPS NOTES
METHODIST CONCERT. (From Our Correspondent.) A concert in aid of Methodist Church funds was held in the Coronation Hall supper room on Friday evening, October 6. The programme was provided by the junior members of the Bible Class and Sunday School, the items being as follows: Recitations, Lilian Lowe, Marion Crammond, Elva Reed, Weston Grant, Stuart Sinclair and Jim Robertson; choruses, My Captain, Praise ye the Lord, Keep Singing; song, Lilian Lowe (Drifting and Dreaming); boys’ chorus; song, Violet Reed and Jim Robertson (To a Miniature); sketch (Trials of a School Teacher); cantata (Dame Dueraen's School). Social Evening. Mrs James Winchester held a successful “Bring and Buy” evening at her residence recently in aid of Methodist Church funds. A large number were present and a very enjoyable evening was spent, games and competitions being indulged in, while musical items were rendered by Mrs J. D. Sinclair, Mrs J. B. Grant, Messrs W. and A. Dixon (solos), Mesdames Capitaneas and W. Robinson (duet). The monthly meeting of the Nightcaps Town Board was held on Monday evening. Mr J. B. Johnstone applied for a crossing to give access to his section in Morley Village.—Referred to Works Committee,
It was decided that the board do all in their power to assist the County Council in urging upon the Wallace Hospital Board the advisability of retaining connection with Waipiata Sanatorium. In reply to the board’s letter regarding assistance to Nightcaps Maternity Home, the secretary of the Wallace Hospital Board wrote requesting clearer particulars.—Hie clerk was instructed to reply stating that the previous letter clearly explained all that was necessary and bears out the contention that as assistance had been given to the Lumsden and Otautau districts, the board considered that Nightcaps district was likewise entitled to assistance. The surfaceman’s report for the month was approved. It was decided to forward a telegram of sympathy to Mrs H. E. Holland and a resolution of regret was also recorded. Appreciative reference was made to the late Mr Holland’s great services to the Labour Pajty and to New Zealand, the members of the board expressing their sympathy in the customary manner. The Nightcaps Tennis Club held their official opening on Saturday, October 7, and though climatic conditions were not too favourable, a large number of players were in attendance. In the absence of Mr C. Carmody (club president), Mr P. Grant extended a welcome to those present and officially declared the court* open.
