Good Dog
A lady once went to live in a rather quiet place. Her husband was away all day, so she made a great pet of her dog, Nigger, that he might keep her company. She would take her dog everyvAiere she went. But this dog became very jealous and if he saw the lady playing with any other dog or cat he would chase them away. One day *he lady was bringing home a lovely little baby boy and she w.as afraid Nigger would be jealous of him and perhaps hart him, so when sue reached home she took the baby _ out and showed him to Nigger. She said it was her baby and they all had to take care of him and keep harm away. The lady is quite sure Nigger understood what she told him for instead of being jealous he was as good as a nurse. When the baby was put outside to sleep, Nigger would not leave the side of the pram or let anyone near even to look at the baby unless his mistress was with them. If baby began to cry, Nigger would get awfully excitel until the lady came out. Later, when the baby was able to walk his mother was not afraid to let him toddle about outside for she knew no harm would come to him while Nigger was there. She would often see them both away in the long grass walking about with just their heads showing but they were always side by side. This is a true story and I think it proves that dogs are more intellegent than lots of folk think. —3 marks to Cousin Margaret Jellyman (13) Queen Street, Otautau.
