THE WHEAT BOARD
ELECTORAL COMMITTEE BALLOT. CANDIDATURE OF MR C. C. DERRETT. At a special meeting of thp. Southland Rate and Taxpayers’ Association held at Riversdale on Thursday night at which Mr T. McMath presided, it was unanimously decided to support the candidature of Mr C. C. Derrett, of Waipounamu, for the Electoral Committee of the Wheat Marketing Agency Company, Ltd., he being nominated by Mr W. G. Mac Kay, president of the Southland Executive of the Farmers’ Union, and also Mr J. Kent, wheatgrower of Otama. Mr Derrett briefly remarked that he had been growing wheat consistently for the last 25 years and he thought a repetition of the methods of disposal of last season s wheat was not desirable. He deprecated the fact that 12,000 tons of flour, equivalent to 600,000 bushels of wheat had been allowed to be imported when there was a surplus of wheat in New Zealand, and he considered there should be more elasticity in the working of the board. He also considered that the growers should have the right, in the event of the board rejecting their wheat, to dispose of it to free millers or to the best advantage.
