FRACTURED VERTEBRAE. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, October 6. An elderly watersider, W. J. Conn, last week fell heavily on his neck while negotiating some steps in the street. Feeling dazed, he sensed some injury and walked to the hospital, where his case created much interest for the Xrays revealed two fractures of the cervical vertebrae or a broken neck. After four days in hospital Conn declined to stay, asserting that he was fit and without pain, cheerfully defying medical law. Conn declared today that he had no intention of dying for many years yet. DEATH FROM FRACTURED SKULL. (Per United Press Association.) Ashburton, October 6. John McPherson, aged 52, a farm labourer, who fell from the running board of a car at Methven last Saturday, died in the Ashburton Hospital this morning without regaining consciousness. McPherson was being given a lift from the racecourse to the townshin when he fell, fracturing his skull. He has no known relatives in the Dominion. SINGLE MAN’S DEATH. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, October« 6. A single man named John _ Henry Hickey, aged 32, who was admitted to the hospital on September 21 for an examination in connection with toxima goitre, was found in the lavatory of one of the wards this afternoon with a large wound in his throat. .An inquest was opened for identification and then adjourned.
