EARLY MISFORTUNE
BYRD EXPEDITION’S SUPPLY SHIP. CALL FOR AID ANSWERED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) New York, October 5. A message from Burlington states that Rear-Admiral Byrd’s supply ship, Bear of Oakland, is reported to be in distress off the treacherous Frying Pan Shoals off the North Carolina coast. She was later taken in tow. The meagre reports received by the Coastguard do not disclose the nature of the vessel’s difficulties, but it is believed that she has developed engine trouble. Rear-Admiral Byrd is not on board. A later message from Southport (North Carolina) states that the Bear of Oakland was towed into Southport late on Thursday by the tug Blanche, which answered a call for aid off Frying Pan Shoals. The Coastguard headquarters advised that the Bear of Oakland had been towed in because the skipper desired to make the port on account of storm warnings along the coast. The advices said the condition of the vessel was satisfactory.
