VIENNA OUTRAGE
WOUNDED CHANCELLOR CONDITION REPORTED SATISFACTORY REASON FOR CRIME (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, October 4. On instructions from the King Sir John Tanbury Williams, Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps, called to-day on the Austrian delegation to inquire about the condition of Dr Dollfuss. Reports from Vienna state that the Austrian Chancellor’s condition is satisfactory. Dr Dollfuss’s 41st birthday to-day was spent in bed reading congratulatory telegrams. Though the police have arrested five Nazis, who are acquaintances of Dcrtil (previously cabled Vergil) and claim to have found Nazi literature in his home, Dertil protests that the crime was not inspired by the Nazis, but solely by a desire to attract attention to his stepfather, Dr Guenther, as the only man who can save Austria. Dr Guenther is the chief Nazi propagandist in Styria, but Dcrtil is not in close touch with him. It is now stated that all of Dertil’s family, including his stepfather, are Nazis.
