UNEMPLOYMENT
GORE COMMITTEE. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. At the fortnightly meeting of the Gore Unemployment Committee last night there were present: Messrs W. D. Shelton (chairmah), R. W. Noake, A. T. Newman, S. Newell, F. M. Murray, J. Hunter and W. O’Byrne. The Southland Executive Committee advised that it had approved of the following job under the new contract scheme of work: Applicant, J. L. Allan and others; cutting new channel up the existing swamp of a tributary of Charlton creek. Mr Jones, county engineer, stated that the job was of such a nature that the men engaged would in all probability earn considerably more than 10/— a day for the time worked. The garden committee submitted a report which stated that seeds had been issued to 55 men, manures to 56 and lime to 26. The distribution of manures totalled one ton and of lime one ton. The committee wished to thank Mr Newman for donating small seeds, the local mercantile firms for gifts of manures and also Messrs Shelton and Gee for the use of their depot, while Mr O’Byme and the Rev. Mr Orchard had given valuable assistance towards the distribution. The Commissioner of Unemployment advised that in future it would not be insisted that relief workers leaving a camp after being there less than one month should refund any transportation costs where the worker accepted a bona fide offer of private employment. In the past the board had deducted from camp workers such costs when. they did not stay in camp one month, but it had been represented that this would involve difficulty for workers in reaching private employment.
