LIGHTNING CALCULATOR
THUNDERSTORM RECORDS. There is a man in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, whom no thunderstorm can terrify. While a storm is in progress in the district he is busy collecting facts about it. This man is Mr S. Morris Bower, and spread over the British Isles are nearly a thousand people who are like him. They are all members of the Thunderstorm Census Organization, of which Mr Bower is the secretary, and it is their business to note details of all electrical disturbances in their districts'. These records are sent to Mr Bower, who files them. Since 1925 many interesting facts about thunderstorms have been established. For instance, the common belief that for every second between the thunder and the lightning the storm is a mile distant is wrong. Actually the storm is one mile away for every five seconds. _ . Londoners have noticed that . night storms have a tendency to avoid the centre of London. This is not due to any natural phenomenon, but to the daily movement of people to and from the city.
