STRIFE IN CHINA
FIGHTING NEAR PEKIN FANG’S REVOLT AGAINST GOVERNMENT JAPANESE BOMBING (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.25 p.m.) Shanghai, September 27 Fighting occurred yesterday 25 miles from Pekin. When Fang Chen-wu’s cavalry sought to enter Kaoliying they encountered Government troops and were defeated. The newspapers report that the Japanese actually commenced bombing before the expiry of their ultimatum inflicting severe casualties on Fang’s troops to-day. Tire demilitarized zone is reported to be ominously quiet. It is believed that Fang’s troops will be allowed to march towards the armistice line, where they will be disarmed by Government troops and a small payment made for each rifle. Fang’s revolt is definitely anti-Government, not anti-Japanese. Four Japanese bombers roared over Pekin yesterday, dropping a further shower of leaflets reiterating an intention to drive Fang Chen-wu from the demilitarized zone in accordance with the ultimatum expiring to-day. The Chinese Press fears that the bandit chief, “Old Rat, ’’ will attempt to create disturbances behind the lines in Pekin and Tientsin.
