COPPER MINE ON FIRE

CHOKING FUMES RISING. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Sydney, September 27. The Great Cobar copper mine at Cobar, which has been idle for some years, is on fire. It is believed that somebody set fire to the ore bins. The poppet head was also set alight. It was burned to the ground and the flames descended the shaft. Dense clouds of choking fumes are being given off, and the smoke has enveloped the town. Nothing can be done to extinguish the fire, which will probably burn to the level of the water in the mine.
