POWER BOARD’S INTEREST.

To the Editor.

Sir, —I have read your report of the remarks of Mr Hargest at a recent gathering in which he stated his attitude in the matter of the Southland Power Board’s interest default. Can this be the same Mr Hargest who, on the election platform two years ago, declared that he stood for the honouring of our obligations to those who lent their money in good faith? There were many then, including the writer, who believed that in electing Mr Hargest to Parliament they were sending forward one who would uphold the credit and good name of New Zealand even if this course might seem to conflict with merely local interests. Are we to be disappointed?—l am, etc., “PERTINAX.”
