MOTOR ACCIDENT

MAN INJURED. REMARKABLE RECOVERY. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, September 27. As a sequel to the sensational accident in Parnell on July 7, when two cars collided and Robert Burns, who was a passenger in one, had his neck pierced by a steel curtain rod, the driver of one car, Annette Thome George, was prosecuted to-day on a charge of negligent driving and failing to give way. The police withdrew the first charge and defendant pleaded guilty to the second. Her counsel said the facts were less serious than might appear. Bums had been discharged from hospital. The degree of negligence should not be judged by the extent of the man’s injuries. Defendant was fined £2 and costs.

Bums made a remarkable recovery. Before he could be taken to the hospital the rod had been sawn from the base by a hacksaw. At the hospital the rest of the rod was withdrawn by a surgeon and' a tube inserted to enable him to breathe meanwhile.
