ROMAN CATACOMBS
WILL BE DUG OUT. Rome, September 11. More than a mile of winding catacombs beneath the Appian Way in Rome are now being excavated. There are the Pretastus catacombs, and were the burial grounds of the early Christians. The existence of the catacombs has been known for centuries, but it is not until this year that any successful attempt to excavate them has been made. The remains of several martyrs of the early Church are believed to be buried there. The walls of the catacombs contain pictures dating back to the second, third, and fourth centuries, and are described as admirable examples of early Christian art.
