The danger which lay in the practice of cyclists riding without lights at night was stressed by the Petone Borough inspector, Mr W, B. Gough, when prosecuting two offenders in the Petone Police Court. “Riding bicycles without lights at night might have been a trivial offence twenty or thirty years ago, when there were only a few horses and carts or pedestrians on the road,” said Mi Gough, “but to-day the cyclist without lights is a serious menace, and might cause death to the cyclist or motorist. I am not asking for a heavy penalty in these cases before the Court, but I wish to draw the attention of the Court and the cyclists to the serious nature of the offence.” Fines of 10/and costs were imposed.
