SPEED BOAT DAMAGED
FIRE ON MISS BRITAIN 111. OUTBREAK AT HIGH SPEED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, September 24. Making its first appearance since its return from America, Mr H. ScottPaine’s Miss Britain 111. caught fire in Poole Harbour while attempting to break Sir Henry Segrave’s record in the presence of thousands of spectators. While traversing the course, at 80 miles an hour the engine burst into flames. Scott-Paine and his . mechanic fought the fire with extinguishers. . Dozens of motor boats rushed to their aid and subdued the flames. The rear portion of the engine was burned, but the hull is intact.
HIGH SPEED ATTAINED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 10.55 p.m.) London, September 25. Prior to the fire Mr Scott-Paine attained a mean speed of 95.08 miles an hour, beating Miss Betty Carstairs’ sea mile record of 86.21 and Sir Henry Segrave’s unofficial record for singleengined boats of 92.78.
