DEATH OF A CHILD NIGHTDRESS CATCHES FIRE EXTENSIVE INJURIES Roger Broughton, aged 3j years, a son of Mr and Mrs G. M. Broughton Duke street, died in the southland Hospital at 2.30 p.m. yesterday as the result of burns sustained when his nightdress caught fire. Just before 6 a.m. Mr Broughton was awakened by the cries of a child in distress. He rushed into the passage to find his little son’s nightdress burning fiercely. Mr Broughton pulled oft the blazing garment, burning his own hands considerably in. the process. Dr Mac Gibbon was speedly summoned. After attending to the child he ordered its removal to the Southland Hospital, where it died at 2.30 p.m. as the result of shock following extensive burns. It would appear from a number ot dead matches found in the kitchen that the child had struck them and set its clothing alight. An inquest was formally opened yesterday afternoon before Mr E. C.
