STEEL CAGE

KIDNAPPER BANDITS’ TRIAL. THE URSCHEL CASE. Oklahoma City, August 26. A steel cage in the courtroom, Italian fashon, is being installed by the Assistant-District Attorney, for the trial of Harvey Bailey, who is described as a real desperado, for kidnapping. With 13 others, Bailey has been indicted for the kidnapping of Charles Urschel, the Oklahoma millionaire and oil magnate. United States officials are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the electrocution of the ringleaders of the gang, who, some officers consider, may be the men who arranged details of the Lindbergh kidnapping. Dozens of threatening letters and telephone calls have been received this week by Urschel and other witnesses, and a special detachment of United States troops will take charge of all transport arrangements to protect their lives against further outlawry. The Assistant District Attorney announces that Bailey and Bates will shortly be transported to Oklahoma City for trial, and adds: “If any of their confederates wish to meet our cavalcade along the road this desire wont be denied them.”

Armed with machine-guns,, kidnappers raided Urschel’s home in Oklahoma City, on July 23, and carried him, with a friend, into captivity. Later, the friend was released to arrange for ransom. His friends paid 200,000 dollars for Urschel’s release. While in captivity, Urschel carefully computed the flying times of. airplanes passing overhead, and on his release, by discovering just where a. ’plane had made a detour on a certain Sunday, was enabled to lead police officers to the place of his captivity.
