THE FINAL DAY
AUSTRALIAN CRUISERS’ VISIT. SPORTS AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENTS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, September 5. The visiting Australian criusers leave in the morning to carry out gunnery exercises in Hauraki Gulf, prior to proceeding south. The last day of the Australian squadron’s visit was marked by a full round of sports fixtures and social engagements. The inter squadron Rugby match was played at Eden Park and at the Domain, an entertaining exhibition of football under Australian rules, was given by teams from the Canberra and Australia. New Zealand won the Rugby match by 14 points to 13. The major social function was the Navy League ball in the Town Hall, given to the officers of both squadrons. Rear Admiral Dalglish in a farewell message warmly thanked Auckland for their hospitality. He was certain the visit had cemented even further the already strong bonds that unite New Zealand and Australia. GUNNERY EXERCISES BOATS IN COOK STRAIT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, September 5. The Australian cruisers Canberra and Australia which have been in northern waters for the past three weeks will be in Wellington from September 21 to 27. Both vessels will be berthed at the wharves. The New Zealand flagship Dunedin will be in Wellington from September 19 to 23, on which date she will leave for Picton, remaining there until September 27. The Diomede will be in port from September 20 to 27. , All four vessels will assemble in Cook Strait on September 27 for gunnery exercises which may include full calibre firing. Several officers of the Royal New Zealand Artillery may accompany the vessels to sea to observe big gun shooting under seagoing conditions.
