WOMEN’S DIVISION. / (From Our Correspondent.) The Woodlands branch of the Women's Division of the farmers' Union celebrated its first birthday on Friaay afternoon, August 18. The function was held in the hall and was attended by over 100 ladies from the surrounding districts. Representatives were present from Gorge Road, Seaward Downs, Hedgehope, Oteramika, Wynoham, Makarewa and Morton Mains. The president, Mrs E. Hargest, extended a coraial welcome to alt present. Competitions were contested and mus.car items were contributed by members and visitors, while a feature of the afternoon was an address by Mrs O. 11. Nicdeter on the Dominion Conterence. The following contributed to the programme, Mrs Edie, Mrs E. Hargest and Misses H. and 'D. Sheat. The competition was won by Miss Dennis. After afternoon tea Mrs A. P. Schmidt, the oldest lady of the Woodlands branch, lighted the candle, and the birthday cake was cut by the president, Mrs E. Hargest, who called on each of the presidents from the visiting branches to cut a piece of cake and then it was handed round to the guests. The beautiful two-tier cake was made by one of the local members, Mrs E. Sinclair, of Mabel Bush. During the afternoon Miss A. Sadlier was presented by the Woodlands members with a hearth rug on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Mrs Hargest presented the gift and wished Miss Sadlier every success and happiness in the future. Miss Sadlier suitably replied. Mrs I”. Robertson presented Mrs O. E. Niederer and the president with a beautiful ~osy of violets and also thanked Mrs Niederer for her excellent address and for coming along and helping to make the afternoon such a success. Mrs A. S. McNaught, Rakauhauka, '.hanked the performers and the visiting ladies for their valuable assistance. Mrs Arnott replied on behalf of the I. jests. Basketball. The Woodlands basketball players met at the residence of Mrs E. Hargest recently to entertain one of their members. Miss Gladys McDonald, prior to her marriage. Games were played and musical items were given by Mrs E. Hargest, Misses Eazel and Jean Frew and Doris De we. After afternoon tea had been handed round Miss Doris Dewe (captain) asked Miss McDonald to accept a crystal salad bowl with the best wishes of all present Mrs E. Hargest said that it was through the efforts of Miss McDonald and Mir" Burt that the basketball team was started. Messrs W. Bell and E. Hargest also spoke and Miss Glad— ’lcDonald suitably replied. Personal. Mr Hicks, of Stewart Island, was the guest cf Mr and Mrs H. Acklin last week. Miss Stella Wilson, Centre Bush, is at presen- 1 the guest of Miss Noele Saxelby. Miss TT I’ ne is spending the school holidays at Timaru. Miss Agnes Schmidt, of the Gore Hospital staff, returned to Gore on Saturday after spending a few days with her mother, Mrs A. P. Schmidt, Woodlands.
