COLAC BAY NOTES

On Saturday, August 12, the local basketball team journeyed to Orepuki, where they met and defeated the Orepuki Club by 16 to 5. A feature of this game was that Miss M. Cleaver scored 14 of the 16 goals for the Colac team. Mr W. T. Te Au was referee. On Saturday, August 19, the local team will travel to Waimatuku to play a friendly match, and to Ermedale on August 26. On Monday, August 14, a surprise party was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. Belsham by the young folk of Colac, the occasion being the 21st birthday of Mr F. Belsham, jun. The evening was spent in dancing and other amusements, music for the dancing being supplied by Messrs Charles Goodwillie, A. McKay, and I. Belsham, extras being played , by Messrs J. Wixon and M. Belsham. Mr W. T. Te Au was M.C. At a suitable interval Mrs Te Au, sen. (the guest of honour s grandmother), gave a speech in Maori, and Mrs Belsham translated it in English, Mr R. Te Au presented the guest with a large key. Amongst those present were: Mr and Mrs F. Belsham, Mr and Mrs D. Te Au, Mr and Mrs Davis, Mr and Mrs Charles Goodwillie, Mr and Mrs A. McKay, Mesdames Te Au, sen., Cross, Winiata, Misses H. and S F. Belsham, K. Leader, R. Rehu, F. Goodwillie, M. Mackie, E. Broamhall, T. Egerton, T. Wixon, D. Sihclaire (Invercargill), Messrs M., I. and G. Belsham, D. and J. Wixon, T. Dallas, J. Whaitiri (Bluff), J. and T. Te Au, J. D. Grigg, E. Clode (Invercargill), H. and R. Te Au.
