WOODLANDS NOTES

A very interesting illustrated lecture was given in the Woodlands Presbyterian Church on Tuesday evening July 11, by the Rev. G. Renwick, the title being on “Scotland.” During the evening a short musical programme was supplied by the choir under Mr G. Piercy. Songs were sung by Miss L. McKenzie and Mr J. Straith. A duet was sung by Mrs R. Walker and Mr G. Piercy. At the conclusion of the lecture Mr C. J. Bigwood proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Renwick for his very able, address and also to the choir and the ladies who supplied the supper. Debating Club. On Wednesday evening, July 19, the Woodlands hall was well filled when the Literary and Debating Club held their fortnightly meeting. Mr E. Hargest occupied the chair. After the general business was concluded the president introduced Mr G. Reed, of Invercargill, who gave a very interesting illustrated lecture on the Islands. Numerous slides showing scenes in Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, and the New Hebrides, and these and the explanatory remarks by Mr Reed proved of immense interest to the audience. At the conclusion of the lecture the Rev. G. Renwick moved a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer which was carried by acclamation. Next evening is to a prepared club debate. Steck Sale. The monthly stock sale at Woodlands was held on Friday when there was a large yarding of dairy cows and only two pens of sheep submitted. There was a fair attendance of farmers. _ The following is a range of prices: Sheep, mixed-age ewes 17/6, m.s. hoggets 10/-. Cattle—A pen of yearling steers sold at 30/- and three in-calf heifers were passed in at £4 5/-. Dairy cows.—A young dairy cow was passed in at £6. Others were sold at £5 5/-, £4, £3 10/-, while cull cows brought £1 to 15/-.
