GORE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Gore Borough Council was held last evening. Jljs Worship the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) presided over an attendance of the following: Councillors J. A. Baldey, W. K. Hamilton, J. A. Wright, A. H. W. Aitken, M. Fitzgerald, R. S. Green, W. Gee, W. T. Trusler jun., D. McDougall jun., A. McLachlan, G. C. Hamilton and F. Wallis jun. The Mayor was appointed the council’s representative to the annual meeting of the Southland League on August 11 and to the conference of the Members of Parliament and representatives of local bodies on the same date. The following were appointed fire police and will be sworn in this morning: Messrs F. Tait, A. N. Stevenson, W. Williams, F. Steel, W. Pollock, and G. F. Ritchie. Committee reports adopted contained the following recommendations:— Finance. The committee had a conference with Mr Henderson, treasurer of the Dunedin City, relating to a scheme for the conversion of loans. The committee has not had an opportunity of going into the matter further since then, but will give a report to the council later on as to what they recommend. Works. Complaint regarding pole, Medway street. —After inspecting the pole complained of by Mr Wylie which he stated blocked access to the right-of-way, the committee recommend that the Post and Telegraph Department be asked to remove it two or three feet until it is clear of the right-of-way. The postmaster was advised of this, the committee meeting him while there. Trees on river bank.—The committee investigated there and afterwards interviewed Mr Anderson regarding the protection of trees and the clearing of the ground, which he promised to attend to. Several places requiring soil could be attended to by relief workers when in the vicinity. Trees donated by Mr G. Wallace, Huron street. —Recommend that the English birch trees be accepted and planted on the side of the street between the comer of Halton street and the entrance to River road on the west side.

Trees at the cemetery.—That the trees be properly topped and not cut down. Any person desirous of topping them for the timber must obtain permission from the gardener to carry out the work under his supervision. Trees in Main street. —That the gardener put in new trees where required and extend them to the borough boundary at the south portion of the borough; also trim the present trees and remove protective woodwork where not required.
