NEW ROUTE OPPOSED GORE BOROUGH COUNCIL’S OBJECTION ADVERSE MOTION Opposition to a change to the route of the main highway between Invercargill and Dunedin by the adoption of the Mataura-Clinton road was expressed at last evening’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council. Mr David McDougall, M.P., forwarded a copy of the following letter from the clerk of the Mataura Borough Council and asked for an opinion on the suggestion: “My council has instructed me to ask if you would give your support and assistance to the proposal to make the road from Clinton to Mataura through Kaiwera and Waiarakiki a main highway. As no doubt you are aware, the object of this is to obtain a direct route from Invercargill to Clinton for traffic, at the same time avoiding about seven railway crossings and the trouble of flooding which occurs on the present highway. The council would be pleased if you can do anything to further the project and bring about the desired result.” Councillor A. McLachlan said it was a very unreasonable request to send to Gore. It would cut Gore right off the map. He moved that the letter be received. Councillor A. H. W. Aitken said that would be discourteous to Mr McDougall and asked for an expression of opinion. Councillor F. Wallis moved that Mr McDougall be informed that the project would not meet with any favour in Gore, that the most suitable route lay through Gore, and that the council was opposed to the suggested route being made a main highway. This was seconded by Councillor Aitken and upon Councillor McLachlan withdrawing his motion was carried.
