SOUTHLAND HOCKEY TEAM.
To the Editor.
Sir,—l read with great interest the letter in the Times by “One Who Knows,’’ and I would like to heartily endorse his sentiments. The selectors, in their ignorance as to what playing conditions and the team they will probably meet in Christchurch are like, have certainly gone the wrong way about the selection of their team, and what is more, it is not from want of telling. Quite a number of experienced players have told them where they were erringplayers who have themselves played against Canterbury in the past and know what to expect; but the selectors have evidently declined to accept and profit by this advice, to the dissatisfaction of a large number of local players to whom the position was selfevident.
On their heads, be it then, if, through lack of practice together and combination, the local team is . severely trounced, and maybe they will “know better next time.”
As to any of those selected obtaining financial assistance from the Association, this is impossible, owing 'to the lack of funds; but I do think the association could have made better use, on these lines, with the pound which the Collegiate Club is asking for the loan of their jerseys, and to which the Association so readily agreed.—l am, etc., “PLAYER.”
