GERMAN GOODS
WORLD-WIDE BOYCOTT MOVE BY THE JEWS FEDERATION FORMED (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) Amsterdam, July 21. The Jewish Conference resulted in the establishment of a world federation with headquarters in London. Dr Samuel Untermyer (honorary president) is co-operating with Lord Melchett’s committee to implement a resolution calling on civilized people to support a world-wide boycott of German goods and shipping in order to protect Jewish rights and dignity in Germany, protests throughout the world being unavailing against Herr Hitler’s incredibly inhuman exterminatory policy. Dr Untermyer urged the League of Nations to act immediately by providing passports enabling Jews leaving Germany to take their property with them, also to enforce the labour provisions of the Versailles Treaty, which Herr Hitler is violating by expelling Jews from unions.
Dr Samuel Untermyer, for years a leading figure of the American Bar, celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday last month. He has practised in New York since 1879, and even when he was twenty-one had established a wide reputation for himself. He defended Asa Bird Gardiner against the attempt to remove him from the post of District Attorney of New York County, represented the Wetheimers, English art dealers, in a case against the Count and Countess de Castellaine, and obtained payment in full of claims amounting to 20,000,000 francs, and appeared in many other cases of magnitude. He acted for the Jewish people in 1927 when he appeared for Henry Bernstein in a suit brought against Mr Henry Ford for articles published against Jewish people in “The Dearborn Independent,” and later in volumes called “The International Jew,” resulting in settlement of the case. More recently he has acted as counsel in the suits of the Transit Commission and the City of New York against Interborough Rapid Transit Company for the maintenance of the five-cent fare in the city, and for settlement of various claims which arose in the course of the action.
