HOCKEY

GORE v. WAIKAKA. A team from the Gore Men’s Hockey Club journeyed to Waikaka on Wednesday and played an enjoyable game with the local team, the Gore team eventually running out winners by 2 goals to nil. The overhead weather conditions were perfect but the ground was on the heavy side. The Gore team is improving with every game and beginning to know their positions and to keep them. The Waikaka team did exceedingly well considering it was the first time several of the members have played the game. Needless to say, at the commencement of the game “sticks” was a common occurrence but as the game progressed this infringement was less common. The Waikaka forwards lacked sting in front of the goal, however, and although they frequently got within scoring distance they were unable to finish off their movements. Ferris and Clutterbuck goaled for Gore. Prior to the men’s match the Gore eleven played a spell with the Waikaka ladies’ team. The ladies acquitted themselves well but were at a disadvantage against the fleetness of their opponents, the Gore team winning by 2 goals to 1. Goals for the men were scored by Ferguson. Mr A. Taylor refereed the two games in his usual efficient manner.

■ Thanks are due to the Waikaka ladies for the hospitality shown to the visitors.
