PUKERAU NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) Following a period of severe frosts, very heavy rain from the south-east fell on Thursday last, which caused swollen streams and has left the soil in a very soft state. The downpour had one redeeming feature however in that it replenished the supply of water in householders’ tanks. The breaking up of the frosts has enabled ploughing operations to be resumed. This work seems to be undertaken later in the season than was the case some years ago, due no doubt to the fact that since top-dressing became popular, pastures do not require to be renewed as formerly, with the result that the areas under cultivation have been considerably reduced. Euchre. On Tuesday evening a match was played in the local hall between teams representing Arthurton and Pukerau in addition to the usual progressive euchre. The contest resulted in a win for the home players by a margin of 22 games, the scores being: Pukerau 155 games; Arthurton 133 games. Prizes for the most games won were awarded to Miss Murdoch first and Mrs Mason second in the ladies’ section and Messrs F. Trapski, jun., first and T. Allan second in the men’s section. An enjoyable dance was afterwards held. A meeting of Kaiwera residents presided over by Mr C. H. Tripp was recently held in the school for the purpose of having the aims and objects of the New Zealand Legion outlined to them by Messrs F. Wallis jun., O. Howells and Thwigg, members of the Gore branch.

The speakers gave interesting addresses and were accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation. All present at the meeting signed an enrolment form and it is intended to later form a district branch.

Members of the Pukerau Rifle Club held their fortnightly shoot on the McNab range on Thursday of the week before last. The usual ranges of 300, 500 and 600 yards were fired over. J. Wylie won the prizes for each range. Following were the scores with handicaps:—
