HARRIERS
COMING EVENTS. July 22.—Combined run of local clubs from St. Paul’s Hall, followed by tea. August 12.—Otago cross-country championship, Wingatui. August 19.—Southland five-mile road championship (second Shield race), Queen’s Park; 3£ miles handicap, Queen’s Park. September 9.—Modified marathon, Dunedin. September 16.—Southland hexathlon. GENERAL NOTES, Both clubs are now settling down to preparations for the road race and a close struggle is assured. It is hoped that the handicap event, to be run on the same date, will attract the nonteam members who otherwise would not be running. If all these men turn out an interesting race should be provided. Before the hexathlon takes place on September 16, the committee will probably revise the system of running it so as to make better provision for the second-grade man. If this is done, a good many more entries should be received and the competition would be considerably more interesting. ST. PAUL’S CLUB NOTES. Another run has passed and the road race is one week nearer. Last week’s run, from Waikiwi, was a good test for the fitter men. After some solid work over the country, the pack divided on West Plains road, the slower men cutting south-east to reach the main road at Todd’s brick works, while the fast pack ran out to the main road near Cooper’s corner. Both packs had a good stretch over the road to the finish. Georgeson seems to be in good form and is getting hardened up for the road. The muster was back to normal last Saturday and far better than the previous week. Some of our members find the road much more to their liking than the country and consequently are showing up to better advantage. Not only is the club catering for the social side with “wet” runs, but a dance is to be held on the 27th. It should be a success as this form of amusement is very popular with most people. The holder of the club “endurance record” was missing on Saturday. It is suggested that he was training for an attempt,to better that record. Maybe he attempted the record once too often. Let us hope not! NOTES FROM ABROAD. On May 25 an A.A.A. team beat Oxford University by 56 points to 52. The meeting produced some brilliant performances. C. J. Mabey (Oxford), who has been running in fine form during the last few weeks, won the three-mile event in 14 min. 40 sec. to break the existing record by 11 sec. F. PhillipSon (A.A.A.) set up a new pole vault record at 12ft. The feature of the day was the treble scored by C. F. Stanwood (Oxford). He took 120 yards high hurdles in 15 sec., the 220 yards low hurdles in 24 9-10 sec., and the high jump at sft. lljin. J. G. Barnes (Oxford) defeated S. Englehart (A.A.A.) in the 220 yards. Englehart is a former English champion over that distance. Visiting Italian athletes secured only two wins against English Olympic representatives on May 27. Carlini won the quarter-mile and Facelli the 440
yards hurdles title. The best race of the meeting was the 120 yards hurdles, in which D. O. Finlay (Royal Air Force) beat C. F. Stanwood (Oxford) by inches in 15 sec. The Italian champion, Facelli, was three yards away. On points the Englishmen scored a very decisive win. The meeting was the Italian Sporting Club’s charity contest. The annual 35 miles walking championship of the London Metropolitan Police was held on May 25. F. Rickards led for 30 miles of the course to finish nine minutes ahead of his nearest opponent in shr. 2min. 53 2-ssec. He broke his own record, established last year, by 7min. 49sec. Rickards has won the event five times, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1932 and 1933. Sixty-seven policemen took part in the race this year.
