NORTHERN TERRITORY

BIG DEVELOPMENT PLAN. WHITE AUSTRALIA POLICY. (United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 12.50 a.m.) Canberra, July 14. The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, announced to-day brief details of a big development plan for the Northern Territory, in conjunction with the British Government, with the object of populating the area, at the same time affording protection for the natives. A sub-committee of the Cabinet is attending to the details. Two chartered companies, one of which is Vesty’s, with immense capital are prepared to embark on development schemes without delay in return for Government guarantees of substantial tariffs and taxation and other concessions and assistance in providing transport facilities. Mr Lyons emphasized that the scheme which had been endorsed would be regarded as part of an Empire development plan to enable Australian defences to be strengthened and permit of a maintenance of a white Australia policy.
